If you are searching very good quality of Japanese traditional souvenir, what do you think to pick beautiful Edo kiriko stuffs?

Have you ever heard the name of Edo kiriko? Tokyo has more than 40 metropolis-designated traditional crafts, which are made with skills, techniques, and material born and sustained in Tokyo through many years. A large part of the creative process involves handwork by artisans.

Edo kiriko is one of the traditional craft which uses thin, vividly colored glass with Japanese-style patterns that are also seen on kimonos, like chrysanthemums and flax leaves. While also a glass craft, Satsuma kiriko from Kagoshima was an art craft which was carefully protected as a local government business. Edo kiriko on the other hand came about through the lives of ordinary people.

From traditional to modern, there is a vast array of tableware with beautiful designs featuring delicate cutting.

To spread knowledge about these traditional crafts that date back to the Edo period, many artisans hold workshops in their own studios. One of them, there is in Sumida, Sumida Edo-kiriko Kan!
