We are having a busy life in Tokyo. Sometimes it’s important to pause and come face-to-face with your inner self. Zazen is a particular kind of meditation and part of Zen Buddhism. Ryugen-ji Temple at Shirokane-Takanawa welcomes between 80 and 100 people of various ages, occupations, and genders to participate in each session of zazen seated meditation followed by a lecture from the head priest.
This temple introduces Zazen seated meditation which is suitable even for beginners. You are always welcome to attend the session!
The aim is to reach enlightenment. In this practice, trainees sit with their legs crossed and their backs straightened (lotus position) as they meditate. The legendary Bodhidharma is the founder of Zen Buddhism and famous for Zazen. It is said that he practiced Zazen for nine years while facing a wall. There are some temples provide the public with Zazen sessions actually, so if Shirokane-takanawa is too far from your place you can check by internet. However, you don’t have to sit for nine years….just 2 hour here in Ryugenji! The attending fee is only 200 yen, first Saturday of each month! Interesting? Please check it out!
