Yokohama’s most famous tourist spot is Chinatown also called Chukagai (bit south-west part from Tokyo, about 50min by train), with over 250 shops all concentrated in a central area near the waterfront. Its most famous landmarks are the very intricate, ornamental gates leading into that section of the city.

In 1859, Yokohama opened to foreign trade. It was one of the first cities to do so, with a large influx of Chinese immigrants bringing their own culture with them. However, foreign residents were restricted to living in certain areas, so formed a very tight community within it. Today Yokohama Chinatown the largest in Asia and one of the largest in the world. It has a huge variety of Chinese-themed stores and Restaurants. Fortunately, most of the restaurants have replicated models of the dishes they serve along with prices displayed outside the shop, so just look for one that looks good and is in your price range.

Yokohama Chinatown has continued to grow and has become a popular destination for Japanese citizens, Chinese immigrants and tourists from around the world. One of the most popular attractions in Yokohama Chinatown is the Kwan Tai temple because of its elaborate architecture and authentic look and feel. But the real treat here is the cuisine offered at its many restaurants and food stands with popular favorites including steamed buns (manju), ramen noodles and a wide array of Chinese dishes that often have a Japanese twist to them. If you’re visiting around the beginning of February, don’t miss the colourful Chinese New Year celebrations.

There are also a lot of Chinese goods shops and food material stores in here. You will never be bored!
